StaffCatherine "Cate" Brown, Ph.D; Pr.Sci.Nat; MSAIEES
Cate Brown has 21 years experience in ecology, with 16 of these in
the field of freshwater ecology. She is an internationally-recognised specialist in all aspects of Environmental Flow (EF) Requirements for
rivers, including: design of methodologies for application in different parts of the world/types of systems/levels of data availability;
determination of EFs; provision of EF information (both social and environmental) for decision-making; design of operating rules for implementation of EFs;
EF management systems; monitoring and evaluation of EFs; and training and awareness raising in all aspects of EFs. Cate has worked extensively in Africa
and SE Asia, with her most recent projects being in Tanzania (Pangani Basin), Lesotho (Lesotho Highlands Water Project), Mozambique (Zambezi Delta),
South Africa (Olifants/Doring River) and Laos (Mekong River). Last year (2004) she was also invited to make presentations at, inter alia, CGIAR
Challenge Programme: East Africa Initiatives - Nairobi, Intercol Wetlands Conference - Utrecht, Netherlands; WorldWater Week - Stockholm, Sweden;
UCT Summer School Lecture Series – Cape Town. Cate is author of 13 publications in the international scientific literature, and of more than 140
contract reports for Clients. She has contributed to chapters in four books.
