Southern Waters operates with a dedicated core team, supported by a network of regularly engaged international specialists. Additionally, we work closely with local specialists in the target river basins, providing training and support as part of most project engagements.
Cate Brown
Prof. Cate Brown is a freshwater ecologist with 30 years of experience, with the bulk of these in southern Africa. She specialises on understanding the links between aquatic ecosystem functioning and flows of water, sediments and biota.
Alison Joubert
Dr Alison Joubert has been working in environmental decision analysis in various fields and in environmental flows since 1990. She is author / co-author of 16 publications in the international scientific literature, has contributed to several book chapters, and to more than 20 contract reports.
Patsy Scherman
Dr Patsy Scherman has approximately 26 years’ experience working in various aspects of environmental management and monitoring, and in aquatic ecosystems – particularly in the development (river water quality) and Ecological Water Requirements, Classification and Resource Quality Objective studies.
Karl Reinecke
Dr Karl Reinecke is a freshwater ecologist with over 20 years’ experience in southern African river ecosystems. Karl has specialist knowledge in community ecology of riverine fauna and flora and in measures to mitigate the impact of water resource developments on rivers.
Ncumisa Dastile
Ncumisa Dastile is an experienced Office Manager specializing in administration, financial management, and HR functions. Proficient in Pastel Accounting, she oversees office operations, supervises support staff, and ensures smooth workflow.
Stephanie Sieberhagen
Steph is a South African psychologist and research consultant with a strong background in mental health, education, and ecological research communication. She has experience in academia, private practice, and interdisciplinary consulting, with expertise spanning psychology, research management, and environmental sustainability.
Hassan Bukhari
Dr Hassan Bukhari is an environmental specialist who has worked on numerous environmental impact assessments and EFlows Assessments for hydro-power projects in the Himalayan region and Africa using the DRIFT ecological and social ecosystem based model.
Nick Huchzermeyer
Nick's focus is on fluvial geomorphology and geography. He has experience in catchment management studies and projects and strongly believes in promoting the avoided degradation of key habitats by identifying and prioritizing key ecosystems.
